Organizational Setting
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) promotes the 2030 Agenda through the FAO Strategic Framework, supporting a transformation to more efficient, inclusive, resilient and sustainable agrifood systems.
The Division of Agrifood Systems and Food Safety (ESF) provides strategic leadership to drive agrifood system transformation and aligns with FAO’s strategic priorities on food safety and national food control systems.
Reporting Lines
The Communication Expert works under the supervision of the Director, ESF.
Technical Focus
Lead all communications activities related to a systems‑approach to agrifood systems transformation, increasing awareness and adoption among key stakeholders and enhancing FAO’s visibility.
Tasks and Responsibilities
Lead and execute communications strategy
Execute activities aligned with the strategy.
Identify opportunities to communicate the systems approach to agrifood systems transformation.
Prepare communications plans for key opportunities, events, and activities.
Analyze target audiences of policymakers, practitioners, and donors to guide strategy.
Monitor and evaluate communications impact, adapting strategy accordingly.
Maintain regular contact with FAO Office of Communications, Partnerships Officer, and other relevant functions.
Lead creation of communication and awareness‑raising materials
Draft key messages tailored to different audiences.
Produce high‑quality outputs: website texts, video scripts, news items, social media posts, infographics, and feature stories on systems change.
Lead research and data gathering for stories of systems change.
Support the Director, ESF with communications activities.
Comply with FAO standards and guidelines (FAO Strategic Framework, FAOSTYLE, FAO terminology, and FAO internal clearance processes).
Minimum Requirements
University degree in communications, media, relations, social studies, language, or related fields.
Minimum 12 years of relevant communication experience, including at least 5 years in agrifood systems communication.
Previous experience in FAO or a UN system is an asset.
Working knowledge of English.
